Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:29-31
God never ceases to amaze me. I sit in our dining room sipping a nice hot cup of roasted Southern pecan coffee, watching the sun begin to peek over the horizon bringing on a new day. In perfect timing, they appear in the sawtooth maple tree in the front yard. Their melodious music rings across the mountainside as the tiny birds feed on the seed put out for them.
One comes in, then flies out and comes back, bringing others to the meal awaiting them. How is it that we as humans, made in the image of God, His most prized possessions, struggle to understand how much God really cares for us?
We sit in traffic jams and at stoplights hurrying, trying to get the kids to school. In our cubical, office, or grocery line we worry about our bills, health, kids, spouses, and friends. Most of our time is spent stressing over situations, dilemmas, and Catch-22s that we can’t change. Fretting, stress, depression and anxiety are things God never intended for us to live with.
In Matthew 10, Jesus reminds us of three things we seem to forget about:
- The hairs of your head are all numbered – not counted, but numbered. If one comes out, He knows which one.
- Fear not.
- Ye are more valuable than the sparrow.
If God knows when a sparrow falls, then He surely has your situation covered. As the hymn writer said, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
Our prayer for you this week: May you come to live outside of fear, knowing God has you covered.
