“When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word and healed all that were sick. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sickness” (Matthew 8:16–17). Looking at these scriptures, we see that Jesus healed all that were brought before him.
We need to understand what brought sickness into the world. It was the fall that took place when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Before the fall, everything was perfect. But when they disobeyed God, that all changed. Sin entered the world; sickness and disease also entered man.
The world today sees it another way. Most of the medical field says sickness and disease are because of physiological and psychosomatic reasons. Many in the medical field who aren’t Christians don’t believe God can heal, but contrary to their way of thinking, God is still in the healing business. Some doctors think that they are the ones who are healing the sick. This same thinking can also be found in the church. Many so-called preachers don’t believe in divine healing.
Modern medicine does help to heal people, but true healing comes from God. God gave man the knowledge and the ability to become a doctor. The Bible tells us that there are two main causes for all sickness. The first reason is sin; the second is Satan. Satan doesn’t want us to be healed. He is doing everything he can to prevent us from being made whole. He wants us to blame God for our sickness. Perhaps you have even blamed God for your sickness.
We need to examine our lives to see if there is sin that is keeping us from being healed. For sin, God provided forgiveness by Jesus’ shed blood. In death, God provides us eternal life and a resurrected life through Jesus. While Jesus was here on earth, He had a threefold ministry. He taught God’s Word, He preached the Word, and He went out and healed every kind of sickness and disease. Matthew 4:23 states: “And Jesus went about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.”
God’s will concerning healing is revealed in Scripture. In Exodus 15:26, God promised health and healing for His people if they remained faithful to His covenant and commandments. We need to do the same thing today. God said, “I am the Lord that healeth thee.” God was the doctor of His people then, and He is the doctor of us today. God’s people need to give earnest heed to seek His face and obey His Word.
We have forgotten that we still need to do the things that God has commanded of us. That may be the reason that we don’t see healings in the church; we think that we don’t have to do what God says we need to do. Do you desire healing? Then put away pride and begin to seek and obey God, and then watch what happens. When we do the things God commands us to do, wonderful things will begin to take place in our lives.
Through Jesus’ ministry, He was representing God’s nature and character. Jesus revealed God’s will, proving that God’s purpose was to heal all who were sick and oppressed by the devil. Through Jesus’ atoning death, we received complete healing and forgiveness of sin. This show that God wants us to be whole in our bodies and our spirits.
We need to come to God with humility and faith, and ask Him for healing and forgiveness. We have gotten away from doing what God told us to do. Nothing has changed; God is still in control, but we want to do it our own way. Understand that no man can heal you or save your soul. That is up to God.
There are times that God will not heal. Sin, fear, and lack of faith can all hinder God. God may also see that taking one of His own is in our best interest. It is far better for us to be with God than to stay here on this earth. Should God decide not to heal us or a loved one, remember that when we die, we will receive our ultimate healing. God promised that there will be no more pain or suffering when we get to Heaven. That would be much better than staying here in this sin-ridden world.
If you are in need of healing, make sure first that you are right with God by accepting Jesus as your Savior. Go to a church that still believes that God can and will heal you. Expect that God will heal you … and know that sometimes God will delay His answer. God may have bigger plans for you. Don’t let anyone discourage you. The devil doesn’t want you well; he is a liar. God promised to never leave or forsake you. He only wants what is best for you. God always keeps His promises. Simply have faith and believe what He has told us in His word.
