As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.
Proverbs 26:11
It has been said we are creatures of habit, and after fifty-five years of life I must agree. Interestingly enough habits are not just the tendencies of our yesterday that seem to keep following us into the future. A “Habit” is also a long, loose garment worn by a member of religious order or congregation.
This week will afford each and everyone of us a new opportunity to change habits. This applies to you no matter what religion, or what religious order you belong to. Life will surround you with conversations, opportunities, occasions, and openings that could change not only your life but others around you.
Can I ask you why do we wear the religious apparel we wear or believe what we believe? Is it because this is what our family has always done? Is this the order, denomination, and/or delegation we have always been. Yet, there is something lacking in our life. If we would be honest, religion has let us down, left us empty, and for the most part, hopeless.
Like dogs and fools we keep returning to our vomit, folly, and practices that have never filled the void in our heart, soul, and mind. Could it be we need to leave the habits of men and pursue salvation, changing what our covering is from manmade philosophy to wearing the name of Jesus applied to us in water baptism? Scripture declares in Acts 4:12 this is the only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
Our prayer for you this week: May we walk away from old habits trusting in the name of Jesus.
